Spiralling Telco Costs and hungry applications? Then read on:

altoHiway are one of the few Expand Accredited Partners and are proud to be promoting Expand's full range of Accelerators. We were the first UK ISP to test and benchmark the products on our own backbone network and saw increases of over 100% instantly.

Expand's mission statement 'To deliver broadband level performance over existing network infrastructure by utilising patented enterprise caching and ACCELERATION technologies' in a nutshell is precisely what they do.

Expands message is clear, to alleviate the customers dilemmas on the network, which are:

Dramatic Increase in data traffic through the Internet, Intranet, e-Commerce and e-Business. Also additional users, branches & businesses.

New 'hungry' applications such as SAP, Baan, Peoplesoft, Oracle, Citrix ICA, Microsoft RDP. Voice over IP and a costly WAN infrastructure.

What Can You Do?

Increase Telco bandwidth but these can lead to Recurring Costs and Long Lead Times. Not only that but can the current network infrastructure support it?

Web Caching a great solution but only benefits Web traffic.

Bandwidth Management again a great solution but does not actually deliver more bandwidth. This can be difficult to implement and maintain.

Compression maximum performance increases of circa 30-40%.

OR ACCELERATE IT!

So how does this work exactly? Well in several ways but the main characteristics are as follows:

Vertical Data Analysis
This effectively optimises the header information in each packet, therefore reducing the size of each and every header passing through the network. Headers are passed as multiple 'bit' sized tokens.

Selective Caching
Selective caching identifies data in the payload, which is worth caching over time. If the accelerator sees repetitive binary patterns it will begin to cache them i.e., store a copy at each side of the network. This process overcomes the staleness issue common with Web caching devices.

Adaptive Packet Compression
The Accelerator looks at the payload and decides if the data is worth compressing, for example GIF's, JPEG's etc will pass unchanged however highly compressible data such as TXT, HTML or XLS it will compress to it's smallest possible size.

Typical Performance Gains are:

Internet 50-150%
Intranet 100-300%
Citrix ICA Sessions 300-600%
SAP 200-300%
Oracle 200-300%
PeopleSoft 200-300%
ASP Services 200-400%
Microsoft Exchange 100-200%
Lotus Notes 100-200%
Voice over IP 100-150%
Mainframe Traffic 300-500%
